Feedback on Staff Hui Self Management

After some discussion the staff came up with the following statements to break down the key competency self management.

• Set high standards

• Developing a range of strategies to become a successful learner

• Plan my work

• Act appropriately in a range of settings

• Become aware of my actions and words on others

• Set high self expectations

• Make well informed choices

• Establish personal goals

We went around each poster and wrote specific goals relating to each statement. Below are the posters.

As part of my inquiry I have held a staff hui to collaborate with the other teachers at the school to gain a better understanding of where we are at regarding the self management key competency.

 I started witha short slide presentation explaining my inquiry briefly.

Todays Learning KPMG Hui March

This morning we all met up at the KPMG head office building  to discuss our design thinking process and where we were up to. Most of us had reflected since our last hui and changed our focus question or direction.

I shared with the group how my focus had changed since meeting up with one of the people that I had previously identified as an expert. After discussing my proposal for inquiry with her we discussed the identified problem and picked it to bits. As a result I realised that it was not 'child speak' that the key competencies had to be translated into but 'teacher speak.'

The learning of the key competencies needs to start at the top and then once teachers are familiar with what they look like, sound like and feel like they can then use this knowledge to inform their planning and classroom delivery.

So where to now?? A prototype needs to be designed so that I have direction for my next stage.

MIT2018 Hui #1

After our MIT hui, I decided to change the focus of my inquiry. I decided to focus on the Key Competencies and creating a tool that would enable children to access the language of the competencies easier. To redesign our initial proposal for the inquiry, we completed a crazy eight brainstorm. This was new to me however I found it very useful to challenge my thinking and reposition my focus.

I left the hui with a clearer picture on what my MIT inquiry would be and was very appreciative of the feedback and enquiring minds that my colleagues on MIT 2018 journey shared with me. Heading back to Christchurch I had lots to consider before I took my next step......

Welcome 2018

This year I have been fortunate enough to have been accepted on the MIT 2018 programme. I am looking forward to contributing to the development of the Manaiakalani pedagogy; Learn, Create, Share and looking for innovative ways to achieve the goals of the programme. This is also a professional development opportunity for me to sit amongst a group of individuals with wonderfully inquiring minds. 

ULearn16 Presentation

Learning how to create and deliver an Ignite Presentation was a new learning experience for me and something that I had not previously encountered. I wanted to present professionally and keep the audience engaged and excited while unpacking my inquiry findings. The results to date have proved that the intervention has been successful and I am excited to share what I have implemented in the classroom.

After researching how to do an Ignite presentation (20 slides which auto advance) 15 seconds each slide, presentation over in 5 minutes, I had to really condense previous presentations and cut all the extra information. Every word had to be carefully chosen and the slides had to be carefully prepared with a balance of images and text which was easy on the eye while still keeping the "guts" of the inquiry intact.

So I started to create..... Once I had completed it and matched the notes to fit, I then converted it into Keynote . That was exciting as I hadn't used Keynote for ages but it turned out well and I felt happy with it. All was needed now was lots of practise.

The day came, the presentation went well and I felt excited to be able to share my findings with other educators. Then I found out that John Couch the Vice President of Education at Apple had listened to my presentation....this was awesome such a privilege.
